It's nearly time for posting to start on
au_bigbang. I have been waiting impatiently to make this post since the end of March. Consider this a heads up: there is going to be a ton of awesome fic over at
au_bigbang, very soon.
In particular, there's going to be my fic, "Right Where We Belong", on the 10th. Summary: When John dies, Dean ends up at the roadhouse and is brought up by Ellen as Jo's big brother. Growing up there is no protection, though -- not when the apocalypse is about to start.
It includes: woobie!Dean, badass!Ellen, bratty!Jo, clueless!Castiel and misguided!Sam! There is angst! There is violence! Dean is mute and scarred and did I mention woobie? And the world is saved by hugging!
I am not even joking.
As I was writing this fic, for some reason, I started to think about a drinking game for it. By way of promo for the fic, I am going to post the rules for that drinking game right now.
Right Where We Belong, or The One In Which Hugs Saved The World: A Drinking Game
It's like this. Take a drink:
Alternatively, grab a bottle of your chosen beverage, click on the cut tag, and start drinking. Keep drinking. No, really, keep on drinking. Don't stop. And -- no, get another bottle. Really! Keep drinking!
Disclaimer: If you drink water each time, you are going to be needing the toilet a lot. If you drink alcohol, well. I'll allow you to hold off on leaving me feedback until after you've had your stomach pumped. I do not accept responsibility for anything that happens to you if you actually attempt to put these rules into practice, they are a joke.
You can now read the fic here!

Right Where We Belong, or The One In Which Hugs Saved The World: A Drinking Game
It's like this. Take a drink:
- every time Ellen calls Dean 'honey'.
"Why don't you say anything, Dean?" She ran her fingers through his hair, carrying him up to the bathroom. "You're safe now, you know. You don't have to say much, but you're worrying me, honey." - every time Ellen is badass.
Dean hadn't even heard Ellen move -- his dad would've scolded him for not being aware enough of his surroundings -- but there she was next to him. "Let go of his arm," she said, in a tone Dean hadn't heard her use before, something with steel in it. "You let go of my boy's arm right now." - every time Jo is badass.
"I'm here," Jo said, even as he finished signing, and grabbed the salt to finish making the ring. She grinned at him. "I've always wanted to be part of an epic showdown." - every time Castiel is badass.
"Get salt. Holy water. Anything you've got," the guy rasped. "Demons are following me." - every time Dean is badass.
He grabbed the bowl they'd got for the ritual thing, grabbed the knife and gripped the handle tightly. His hand was already slick with sweat, but he just gripped the knife even tighter, determined not to fuck this up. He couldn't fuck this up. - every time Castiel sneaks up on someone.
"You look well," Castiel said, the minute he set foot out of his room the next morning. Dean jumped about a mile this time and then glared at him fiercely. It was hard to express just how indignant he wanted to be with handsigns. - every time Castiel and Dean have
eyefuckingstaring matches.
His head was tilted a little to the side, and his eyes -- Dean caught his eyes and those eyes pierced him, so blue it hurt, so alive. - every time someone gets a hug.
Ellen hesitated for a moment and then carefully put her arms around him, lifting him up. He should've been too heavy for that, or getting there anyway, at his age. He was far too easy to lift. - every time Dean nearly cries.
She held him tightly and rocked him then, and though his eyes were dry and he didn't make a sound, the whole time his throat and chest were tight and they hurt. - every time anyone nearly cries.
"Dean?" she asked, into the pillow, and he nodded, holding onto her tighter. She sounded choked up. - every time Dean's lack of self-worth is obvious.
"You're going to be okay," she told him, firmly, and he hid the undamaged side of his face against her welcoming shoulder. - every time Castiel Does Not Get It.
'Yeah, well, no big. I need breakfast.'
Castiel didn't move.
'I need to get past you, dude. To the kitchen.'

Date: 2010-05-05 12:45 pm (UTC)I was particularly amused by every time Ellen calls Dean 'honey', because I had a story where I had to go through and tone down having one particular character call everyone "honey" or "sweetheart" all the time, even though she does do it a lot in canon.
So I'm curious - once you started noticing this, did you go back and remove/change any of these incidents, or try to write few of them in later parts? Or did you just let them appear as they naturally wanted to?

Date: 2010-05-05 12:51 pm (UTC)I did pare down the 'honey' just a little, though for the most part I left it intact -- I've been working mainly on my dialogue in writing for a long time, so for the most part it felt/looked natural. I'm doing a final sweep soon, so a couple more might bite the dust, but we'll see...
