"I have a brother," Dean says. Quistis didn't think he knew she was there. She moves closer, and he makes room for her on the rock he's sitting on. The training center is deceptively quiet. Quistis knows there's life all round them, perhaps eyes on them. She sits, says nothing. Dean doesn't look at her, really. "Back where I come from."

"Where is that?"

"Not here," he says, and shrugs. "That's all that matters, isn't it?"

"Are you homesick?" Quistis asks. She doesn't know what homesickness feels like. The GFs have taken so much -- perhaps best that they have, that all she knows is SeeD, and her friends here, and the fighting. Better that she can't think of a home.

"Not really. Haven't had a home since I was a kid. All I had was my brother and my dad." Dean looks at her suddenly, too sharp, eyes narrowing. "I heard you didn't even have that."

She shrugs, too. "I'm an orphan, yes."

"You don't care?"

"I don't know anything else. Not really. There's people I grew up with -- the commander is one of them."
