On Sunday, it'll be time to post my [livejournal.com profile] kink_bigbang. For right now, I have a bit of a teaser. My artist made a minimix, and so did I, so it's my minimix that I'm providing now -- and, in a couple of days, I'll be able to link to it on this post. This comes complete with teasers from the fic.

The cover art is by [livejournal.com profile] auroraprimavera.

It has been a very, very long time since I posted any recs. I have fandom hopped since then! Since I have so very very many bookmarked since that time, I'm going to try and be selective, but it's still likely to be a long list. It's funny, there are also a lot of fics I've bookmarked that definitely have their flaws, but that I love for something perfect inside them. So I'll give those some love too. It's not just the absolutely perfect ones, here.

And, well. I write a lot. And I don't often, these days, crosspost a lot. So there is a lot of my fic that I don't feel has got the attention that maybe it deserves. So, for posterity, here goes. Some self-recs. I do not promise brilliance, and nor will I pretend ambivalence. I think my fics are awesome; that much is obvious.

John Winchester's journal won't do much for you if you're not a fan of Supernatural, but if you are, it's an ultimate geeky resource. It contains all the bits we've seen from the journal in the show, at least up to 2009, and lots of little extra tidbits and stories about the young boys. We learn about the first time Sam walked -- took a few steps towards Dean and fell on his face -- and stuff like the fact that Sam is an evangelical Mac user, Dean's first solo hunt involved the ghosts of lesbian nuns, and what John did for their birthdays. You see a side of John that we didn't see so much in the show, and you have to wonder how much Sam was exaggerating the horrible way John raised them. You see the side of John that's a father, not a drill sergeant. Parts of the journal seem to be written, parts to the boys, and parts just record interesting hunting information. There are some nice little bits about how John sees his boys, including one really good bit about how when Sam sets his mind on something he won't change it, "you might as well wrestle angels".

Very fun. Not visually how I expected -- I expected it to be more like what we saw in the show, not a neat little book with typed pages, but I don't think it's meant to be a physical replica of John's diary. I'm not sure how canonical it is, and I haven't read it cover to cover, so there may well be bits missing. There aren't any replica newspaper clippings or anything 'tucked in' so it's possible some of the information from the series isn't in there. It's still interesting and if you like fanfiction, I think you could pull some nice details from it.

It makes reference to episodes (e.g. Something Wicked) and the comics (I know there's stuff from Rising Son) so beware of spoilers.

The Supernatural Book of Monsters, Spirits, Demons and Ghouls is quite interesting. It's put together by the same guy who later put together John Winchester's Journal. It's not as fun as that, since it's mostly just information about the monsters (et al) that they encounter in canon. It is kind of fun, it's written from the boys' point of view, but it's hard to imagine them actually sitting down and writing a how-to guide like this, so I wouldn't take it too seriously. It's a good resource for plotty fanfiction or roleplay, I think, and there's some nice background information, but I don't think I'd really sit down and read it just for fun.

Witch's Canyon, by Jeff Mariotte, is maybe the best of the three books. It doesn't try too hard to characterise Sam and Dean, mostly focusing on the job, and revealing bits and pieces of them at times. It's still not great, but I liked it better than the other two. The plot felt very much like a Supernatural episode, although it did have the advantage of having much more time to build up. I kind of felt like the forty-year cycle wasn't adequately explained, even if it was caused by a bitchy witch, but it was fun.

I know it's realistic that people are stupid, but really, some people in this book took the cake. Still, there were a couple of characters I got to quite like for trying to help the boys: namely Baird and Juliet.

Still a quick, relatively trashy read, but fun all the same.

Bone Key is the second Supernatural novel, by the same guy as Nevermore, Keith R. A. DeCandido. The same pitfalls of his writing apply: very flat, but interesting plot and some good lines.

There was one awesome scene where Dean starts channelling the powers of many, many ghosts. It's quite a visual scene: it'd be better to actually see it than read it, really, but it's an interesting mental image.

But the boys really wouldn't leave loads of supercharged ghosts hanging around. Bad characterisation there.

Okay, yeah, I'm a geek and people bought me the Supernatural tie-in novels for Christmas. Nevermore is by Keith R. A. DeCandido. I've read one of his tie-ins before: it's okay, but to some extent I felt he didn't really get inside the characters, even if some of the lines were good.

Same here. The plot felt like Supernatural, but there was no creep factor and I didn't think he got Dean at all. Of course, everyone has their own interpretations of characters, but I felt his characterisation of everyone was pretty flat, even his own characters.

It's kind of fun to read, as a extra bit of the series and for some of the lines and references, but it's not super amazing.
