Musing: general - Fickinks
May. 9th, 2008 10:20 amLet's talk about fickinks! By which I mean, plots or situations in fics that never fail to interest you. Actually, there are some examples of mine in the actual text of some fandoms, which makes me happy. But I still call them fickinks. I've got some fandom specific ones and three or four main general ones (and then, under the cut, the actual sex-related kinks!).
Absolute loyalty
The best example of this is Juubei, from GetBackers. He believes he was born to protect Kazuki. He'd give up anything and everything for the sake of Kazuki. There's also Simon, from Firefly, who canonically gives up everything he has for his sister's sake -- using up all his (considerable!) fortune, leaving the job he loves, turning the rest of his family against him, losing everything he has, and going to get her out of the Academy.
(Partner) betrayal
I love, for some reason, reading about (or mostly roleplaying) betrayal. Mostly partner betrayal, although Juubei's canonical betrayal of Kazuki slays me too. There's just something really interesting about someone turning on the person that they're supposed to be devoted to.
And let's face it, I really like reading about the whole desperation of "we shouldn't be together, I'm married".
I suppose "we shouldn't be together, but to hell with that for this one time" is a sort of subset of this. Although it may be caused by other factors than partner betrayal.
Blindness
I really don't know why, but a sighted character becoming blind is something that really interests me. Again, canonically, Juubei ends up blinded as a result of his betrayal of and loyalty to Kazuki, which is possibly why he's one of my favourite characters ever.
Psychicness
This isn't really a main fickink, but I do love it when someone gets the power to know more than they should know. River, canonically, is awesome for this. I've also played psychic!Simon (several times), mindreading between "soulmates", and psychic!Barney. It's fun to try and imagine what it, realistically, would be like.
The idea of someone in the real world being psychic creeps me out like you wouldn't believe, though.
Mindfuck
The fact that I nearly always write Seifer as having been controlled and/or severely manipulated by Ultimecia sort of speaks for itself.
Firefly-specific
Simon with guns. When Simon goes against the Hippocratic Oath, there's got to be something really interesting going on in his head. The three times he takes up weapons in the course of the series (the pilot, War Stories and in the movie) really, really interest me. Of course, he doesn't really go through with shooting anyone (unless he gets some Reavers in Serenity, but I don't actually think so). So I love fic where he does.
This would possibly apply to any character who for some reason shouldn't have a gun, whether they're pacifist or a medic.
The Dark Is Rising
Barney being prescient. The last time I reread, I went through and noted all kinds of places where he seems to sense more than the others do. And of course, in Greenwitch he actually scrys. I like exploring the idea that when he grows up, he can control the scrying or he becomes stronger in it or whatever.
Smut fickinks
Bondage, knifeplay, bloodplay, crossdressing, master/slave, magickink, threesomes, double penetration, exhibitionism, voyeurism... oh hell, anything, basically, as long as it's well written. Most of these kinks are not mine in real life, but ficwise, I'm pretty easy. The thing is that I don't like excrutiating detail. Tell me what's going on and what they're thinking and how they're feeling, of course, but I prefer a light hand with the detail. (Of course, saying that, there's some fairly detailed fics that I find hot like burning, so.)
So now you all know how to push my buttons.
I say all this because I'm interested. Who else has fickinks? What are they? As much/as little explanation as you like. Does anyone else have a weird liking for putting guns in a doctor's hands?

Date: 2008-05-09 01:59 pm (UTC)Justice. People getting what's coming to them. I don't care how it happens, but seeing villains get what they deserve is quite possibly the best thing ever. Never mind that I might have been cheering on that villain for at least some of the time, I want to see them fall.
Falls from grace. Heros screwing up. Antiheros getting caught in the act. Relateable villains turning unredemptively evil. It's character growth if handled properly and I don't read it often enough.
Redemption. The reverse of the above, and possibly my favorite thing of all time. But it has to be someone, like Seifer, with the potential for good. I couldn't read anything with Muraki being redeemed because that would involve him realizing what he's doing is completely wrong. It'll never happen.
Sexual: Blood, knives, breathplay, incest, shota/loli (sometimes, fuck I'm a perv), crossdressing, dubcon/noncon, sex with one person pressed against a wall, sex with one person sitting in the other's lap.

Date: 2008-05-09 02:32 pm (UTC)Barney's all sweet and well, I'd think he'd be rather awed by it? Or at least the beauty of it, which then brings the art into the factor. :3

Date: 2008-05-09 04:25 pm (UTC)Wings. Angel wings/bird wings, specifically. Bonus points for more than two wings on one person. This is why Angel Sanctuary kills me, because ungh so many pretty wings. Also why I love Rinny with wings and the fact that Ultimecia has wings to begin with.
Falls from grace. This can go with the wing thing. Again, Angel Sanctuary being a good example. xD; Lucifer fascinates me, so any kind of Lucifer-related thing is definitely a huge bonus. Anti-heroes kinda go in this category: people like Seifer, Riku, and Vergil. Especially Vergil. Oh, Vergil.
Past lives. I don't care how or who or what. I have a special spot for Leon/Seifer KH-verse past life nonsense, because then I can get all weird and yeah.
Magic/Magickink. You can get so many amazing things out of magic. So many crazy fics and smutty fics and cute fics and ♥.
Sorceress or Prince or Princess/Knight relationships. This is pretty easily explained. xD
Mindfuckery. This is why I like to write for Jason Todd and Seifer. I owe those boys an apology, as I've never even written Jason as not insane and I rarely write Seifer as not-fucked-up. 8D It just. It's tragic and interesting and I love looking into people's heads and seeing what makes them the way they are and how they ended up that way and all the little details in between.
Angst. *cough* Ahem.
Soul mates/other half.
Smut: "pressed against a wall" kink, "we really shouldn't be doing this here but who gives a fuck" kink, bondage, master-slave, incest/twincest, "I hate you, so let's have sex!" situations. I only like smut if there's just enough detail to get me by, to tell me what's going on and to tell me what the characters are thinking. I hate super-detailed smut because, well, it sorta grosses me out. And I can never seem to find it done well.

Date: 2008-05-09 05:02 pm (UTC)And I love happy endings. I love when, after all that suffering, everyone lives happily ever after with two point five kids, a dog, and a white picket fence.
Alternately, really happy light fics with terrible endings (or which you know canon will fuck up, like Zack/Aeris fluff or Axel/Roxas being bff) makes me sob, but I can't stop reading it.
In sexfic I like characters who fumble and are kinda awkward. Awkward is awesome. For some reason 'real' details and stuff makes me happy. When everyone doesn't smell like vanilla and their mouths don't taste like strawberries and they don't always know what to do with their hands.
And I love writing everything I love reading. Works nicely that way.

Date: 2008-05-09 07:01 pm (UTC)In more FF-related things, I'm a big fan of anything that plays with meta and magic and how the worlds are all interconnected; like, how the Summons/GF are the connecting factor or how certain magical traits (Summoning, blue magic) can be connected to other worlds. This is probably why I write so much cross-verse FF stuff.

Date: 2008-05-09 08:27 pm (UTC)One eye. I don't know why, exactly, but at least one character in every 'fic I write seems to wind up losing one eye. I must have a thing for eyepatches and scarves.
Scars. Because I tend to read and write 'fic in fandoms that are heavy on 'warrior' archetypes, I'm quite fond of characters having scars, especially the warrior women. That's just hot, IMO.
Destiny that is not destiny. If there's one thing I can't stand in traditional fantasy literature, it's the idea of the Chosen One. I've never quite felt that anybody is born for any special purpose. If you accomplish something, it's because you're in the right place at the right time, not because you were born special. My favorite protagonists are those who stumble into their heroism. (Take Mal, for example.)
Vomit. I can't explain this one, either. Sooner or later, somebody's going to wind up puking. Maybe it's because I like to read a little realism? I don't know.
As far as smutfic goes, I'm not too particular, but I'm a pretty vanilla reader and writer.
