Review - Anne of Green Gables
Jul. 16th, 2008 12:40 pmI just finished reading the Anne of Green Gables series by L. M. Montgomery. I read the first book while I was little, adored it, read it over and over again -- so when I joined bookmooch the first thing I did was mooch all the books of that series I didn't have, which was most of them.
At first, the series is light, sweet, a little quirky. The books in the middle that aren't so much about Anne herself, who made the first book so charming, aren't as good, in my opinion. And the final book is something so completely different in tone from the first that it's hard to believe, yet I think the first and last books are the best. The last is set during the First World War, and it's actually really painful to read.
The whole series has a rather good handle on people, I think, and they're all easy to read, and touching. The last book can't really stand alone, because of all of the building that the books between the first and the last do, but it's definitely worth the low points of the series to get there -- in my opinion.
My main complaint is that I'd have liked a good deal more of Gilbert in all books, and more of Anne in the later ones.
