Yay for people with huge vocabularies.

Amusing story: celeloriel was beta-reading "Every Light" for me. I had one character referring to himself as an "inveterate gossip." Cel's comment was "It fits, and suits him, but I know three people who even recognize the word, never mind know what it means, and you and I are two of them." It was really funny at that moment but I've since realized it was also very true (random polling of my friends, all of whom have university educations from one of the top ten schools in the country.)
