Musing: tv - Robin Hood BBC, a traitor?

Yesterday someone on [livejournal.com profile] robinhoodbbc posted this, with news that one of the characters is going to be a traitor next season. This makes me pout, because I love them all and love the dynamics they've got doing. If the BBC gets it wrong, there will be hell to pay. Um. Sort of. I will hate them with all the hate not already concentrated on the movie-that-doesn't-really-exist.

Anyway, I've been reading other people's reactions and me and Lisa talked about it quite a lot yesterday, so I'm sort of ready to put my thoughts together on the subject.

The gang as it stands: Robin, Marian, Much, Djaq, John, Will and Allan. At first glance, I don't want to believe any of them could be a traitor, so perhaps it could be someone who joins the group. The trouble with that is how closely knit the group has become: I think it'd be hard for someone else to get in there. So I think it would have to be family members or old friends (or potentially, in Much's case, Eve). For example, Marian's father. If I remember rightly, he apparently accepted what she's like, but with a bit of heavy hinting from Gisborne... "Your daughter's association with Robin could... hurt her. I'm sure neither of us want to see her hurt, so if you would cooperate..."

I'm not sure how well we (the viewers) would respond to someone else being thrown into the mix, though. So they could use minor characters, such as Marian's father, Will's family, or Eve. Eve may seem a little obvious, but she did work for the Sheriff before, so there's a potential for her to realign with them. That would kind of negate the loveliness about her and Much's relationship, though.

So, onto the main characters.

Robin -- Robin is, pretty obviously, out. Unless he doesn't mean to cooperate then he's not going to work against himself -- and it's suggested by the word "collaborating" that the working against isn't accidental.

Marian -- It seems doubtful after the events of last season that she would turn on Robin. But perhaps pressure could be put on her using her father, Gisborne could make promises about not harming Robin and she could try to believe the best of him...

Much -- He's the first one I think is actually likely to give. He's the least suited for life in the forest, I think, and he took very easily to being back in the comfort of civilisation. It'd be easy to put pressure on him by threatening Eve or promising that Robin wouldn't be treated badly if caught. Also, Robin has been really, really horribly nasty to him lately in the series, so despite the fact that Much seems the forgiving type, maybe Much just wants the whole thing to be over.

Djaq -- Some have said she'd be too obvious as a traitor, but there's actually little the Sheriff can do to her to make her betray Robin. She's already been in his clutches first and given up nothing. Threats to the others she might not really believe: they've already escaped from the Sheriff doing his worst. She could perhaps be tempted by technology -- remember her taking the ledger out of the fire so it didn't burn? -- but I doubt it. The Sheriff could perhaps find her brother somehow and use him against her, but again, it's a bit of a stretch and the way she doesn't seem to have hope of him being alive makes it that bit more of a stretch.

John -- John would be pretty easy to threaten, because of his son and such, but he's also one of the most steadfast of the group. If there's a rock in the group, I think it would be him. Despite that one episode with a lot about him in, though, I don't think we know him well, and he might just surprise us.

Will -- Again, easy to threaten because of his family, but he does have that whole hatred of the wicked upper class thing going. He's an honest workman, and can't even run away with money, let alone betray Robin and the gang to their deaths. And he loves Djaq, so he won't want her to be hurt.

Allan -- While Allan is the most "dodgy" of the group, he has proved loyal to it. He could perhaps be tempted by money, but after what happened to his brother, and considering the fact that he's probably the hardest to threaten... I think using his "dodginess" would be too obvious and the group are pretty much a family to him now, so I doubt he'd betray them.

I'm worried about what the next series will bring, with this, though. Is it going to be an overarching plot? The last season wasn't terribly good with that: most of the plots were self-contained, apart from the romantic subplots. And the idea of having a traitor in the midst is rather serious for a relatively light hearted series. I'm hoping the writers learn to tread lightly with this one and build up to it, rather than bludgeon us with it in one single episode.
