Musing: tv - Applying Occam's razor
This is a gathering together of various ideas and things I've said about this.
There are various theories about why Marian isn't dead. There's also my wish that Carter isn't dead, though I don't think people have paid much attention to him.
Note: I may have missed stuff because my dad was drunk and noisy.
Marian isn't dead
They buried her.
Marian isn't dead because we didn't actually see her being put into a grave
Right. So, you dig a hole for someone who isn't dead. And because they're so very nearly dead, you hang around next to the hole instead of rushing them to someone who can help. But it's okay! They magically survive anyway.
And then you act all sad and leave the Holy Land without them.

One, I haven't seen a direct quote of her saying that, and two, even if she did, she could have been contractually obligated not to let on that her character died.
There's no show without Marian!
What are you on? In the original legends, there was no Marian. I've read books where the main character, the hero, dies. I've read versions of Robin Hood where Robin dies halfway through! This is going to have an interesting affect on Robin. The villains are still alive and there's still a war on. There's still a lot of material for a third series.
Carter isn't dead
We don't see him being buried. We do see a covered grave with a shield on it -- it could be any of King Richard's knights. However, there are no other knights present, which suggests that they haven't been back to camp for the burials (because if they had, other knights would be present to honour Carter). Carter was the only one of Richard's knights present. We don't see him in the burial scene. Therefore, he is most probably the one in the already covered grave.
It was all a dream!
Alright, they were dying in the desert. Hallucination? Yeah, maybe. Maybe they hallucinated Carter's arrival to save their ass... hey wait a minute, wouldn't that mean they'd die anyway in the desert? Whatever.
Think about it. Once you've got two graves, with Carter apparently not present and Marian limp and unmoving, the likelihood is extremely high that both of them are dead, and the graves are for Carter and Marian. Apply Occam's razor (the simplest explanation is most likely) and Carter and Marian are dead.
Where would the mileage be, for the BBC, in showing something like that? Consider that the show isn't much into dream sequences and hallucinations. Consider that it was the season finale. It'd be a waste of money and time for them. Apply Occam's razor...
Disclaimer: I actually like Marian. If the BBC can make it plausible and interesting that she's still alive, I'm all for it. And if you want to write AU fic where she survives? Go right ahead. I'm writing one where Carter lives, after all. Just. It is AU.
